What Is Integrative Primary Care?

And why it might be the most important healthcare question you ask.

It Starts With Primary Care — Done Right

Primary care is the foundation of your health. It accounts for roughly 80% of your healthcare needs — from routine visits and chronic disease management to urgent concerns and preventive care. It is where your health story is held, where patterns are noticed over time, and where the most meaningful interventions happen.

At Integrative Family Medicine, we believe that foundation deserves more than a seven-minute appointment and a referral pad.

Integrative primary care is what happens when you give a great primary care physician the time, the relationship, and the full picture of a patient's life — and ask them to bring every available tool to the work of keeping that person healthy.

That is what we do. That is all we do. And we believe it is the best medicine available.

What Makes It Integrative

The word integrative is not a marketing term for us — it is a clinical philosophy.

Integrative medicine is an approach to care that looks at the whole person, not just the presenting problem. It considers the full range of factors that influence your health — physical, emotional, nutritional, environmental, and relational — and draws on the best of both conventional medicine and evidence-informed complementary approaches to address them.

At Integrative Family Medicine, that means your provider is not just asking what is wrong. They are asking:

  • How are you sleeping?
  • What are you eating — and what is your relationship with food?
  • What is your stress level, and how does it show up in your body?
  • Are you moving in ways that support your health, not just your fitness goals?
  • What is happening in your relationships and your life that might be affecting your health?
  • What does your family history tell us about where we need to be watchful?

These are not extras. They are the foundation of good medicine. Conventional primary care has always known this — it simply has not had the time to practice it. We built our model specifically so that it does.

What Makes It Primary Care — And Why That Matters

Integrative primary care is not a specialty. It is not a supplement to your regular doctor. It is your regular doctor — practicing medicine the way it was always meant to be practiced.

That distinction matters, because integrative medicine is sometimes associated with practices that exist outside of or alongside conventional medicine. At Integrative Family Medicine, we are your comprehensive primary care team. We manage acute illness and chronic disease. We prescribe pharmaceuticals when they are the right tool. We refer to specialists when needed. We coordinate your care. We are your first call and your consistent partner.

What makes us different is not that we reject conventional medicine. It is that we use every appropriate tool — conventional and integrative — in service of understanding and improving your whole health. We are not anti-medicine. We are pro-patient.

What We Are Not — And Why It Matters

We do not offer functional medicine.

This is an important distinction and one worth understanding clearly.

Functional medicine is a specific clinical model that typically focuses on identifying the underlying root causes of chronic illness — often through extensive specialized lab testing, detailed analysis of gut health, hormonal systems, genetic markers, and other complex biomarkers. It frequently involves highly individualized supplement and protocol-driven treatment plans and tends to be oriented toward patients with complex, chronic, or difficult-to-diagnose conditions.

Functional medicine is valuable for many people — but it is a specialty, not a primary care model. It is typically not covered by insurance, involves significant out-of-pocket investment in testing and supplements, and operates outside of the scope of comprehensive primary care.

Integrative primary care is different. We are a full-service primary care practice. We address the full range of your health needs — from a sore throat to blood sugar management to preventive screenings to mental health referrals. We use an integrative lens to do that work more thoughtfully and more completely. But we are not running specialized functional medicine protocols, and we do not position ourselves as a solution for complex chronic disease management outside of primary care scope.
If you are looking for functional medicine, we respect that path and are happy to point you in the right direction. If you are looking for primary care that actually sees the whole you — this is the right place.

What Makes Our Approach Different

We have the time.

By operating as a Direct Primary Care membership practice, we have removed the insurance-driven incentive to see as many patients as possible in as little time as possible. Our providers carry smaller patient panels, which means more time per visit, more availability between visits, and a real ongoing relationship — not a series of disconnected appointments.

We have the relationship.

Our providers know you. Not just your chart — you. Your history, your goals, your stress, your lifestyle, your family. That continuity changes everything. It is the difference between a provider who notices something is off and one who is meeting you for the first time.

We look for solutions.

We do not believe in managing problems indefinitely when there is an opportunity to understand and address what is driving them. We ask the deeper questions — about nutrition, sleep, stress, movement, environment, and lifestyle — because those answers often tell us more than a lab panel alone.

We use every appropriate tool.

We prescribe medication when it is the right answer. We also ask whether there are evidence-informed nutritional, lifestyle, or behavioral interventions that should be part of the plan. We refer to specialists and complementary practitioners when the situation calls for it. We recommend both evidence-based western medicine and natural options — neither rejecting nor accepting either without discernment.

We practice prevention.

The best healthcare is the kind that keeps you from needing the healthcare system. We are proactive about screenings, risk assessment, and lifestyle guidance — because catching something early or preventing it entirely is always better than managing it after the fact.

Our Values

And why it might be the most important healthcare question you ask.

Authentic Human Connection

Medicine is fundamentally relational. We show up as real people — present, attentive, and genuinely invested in the people in our care. We believe the quality of the relationship between patient and provider is itself therapeutic.

Humbly Confident

We bring deep clinical expertise and a steady, grounded presence to our work. We say "I don't know" when we don't know, and we find out. We hold our knowledge with humility and our commitment to your health with unwavering confidence.

Positive Presence

We believe the environment in which care happens matters. We bring warmth, optimism, and genuine enthusiasm to this work — because health is worth being hopeful about, and our patients deserve a team that reflects that.

This Is Medicine That Was Always Possible

Integrative primary care is not a new idea. It is what primary care was always supposed to be — before the system made it impossible.

We built Integrative Family Medicine to make it possible again. With the time, the relationship, and the philosophy to practice medicine that actually sees you — and actually works.

If that is the kind of care you have been looking for, you are in the right place.
