Accepting New Patients
Jennifer’s Personal Philosophy
My goal is for patients to feel that they are receiving compassionate care from someone they trust. I aim to create space for patients to share their stories and concerns freely and comfortably. Then, we can create plans with consideration to their own personal goals and preferences.
About Jennifer’s Approach
I believe that when we are able to take time to really get to know our patients then our care can be infinitely better. When I know more about a patient’s history, family, lifestyle, hobbies, etc then we can formulate a care plan together that is going to feel better and work better for that specific patient. Getting to this point requires creating time and space for open dialogue.
Jennifer Schirner, FNP-C Bio:
Jennifer grew up in Ohio and moved to North Carolina to attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where she earned her bachelor’s degree in environmental studies. She went on to earn her master’s degree in teaching for biology at Western Carolina University. After several years in education she realized her true passion for medicine. In 2010 she returned to school at James Madison University to become a Physician Assistant. She has been working as a PA in the family medicine and urgent care settings since that time.
Jennifer recognizes the importance of care that focuses on a comprehensive lifestyle approach. Her practice draws from conventional medicine but also incorporates other proven natural therapies with a strong emphasis on prevention and health promotion. She is excited to serve and work with the community where she lives and which she loves.
When she is not in the office she is spending time with her husband, 3 young children, and dog. You can find her on a trail, a river, chasing a kid, and trying to find joy in the in-between moments.
Q & A with Jennifer:
Why did you choose Integrative Family Medicine as your medical practice home?
I was attracted to IFMA for several reasons. First, the DPC model really allows for more time to be spent with patients which I think is so important for quality care. Second, I get to work with a really great group of people that care about what they are doing.
What should new patients know about your approach to medical care?
This is all about you! I am here to help you navigate your health journey based on your preferences and goals. I lean heavily on evidence based medicine but also know that it’s important to partner with patients to individualize care for each unique person.
What do you feel is the most important component of the patient/provider relationship?
Being able to communicate effectively and mutual respect.
What do you love most about practicing medicine?
What I like most about practicing medicine is developing meaningful and ongoing relationships with patients. It’s an honor to help people during difficult times and rewarding to celebrate the wins together. I also enjoy problem solving. Much of the time medicine is like finding pieces of a puzzle and figuring out a way to put them together. There is satisfaction in figuring out those problems.
Who, specifically, is going to love having you as their medical provider?
Anyone looking for support and direction on their health journey! Bonus points for sense of humor and humility.
