Integrative Physician
Michael grew up on a farm in southwest Virginia a few hours north of Asheville. Seeking analternate path after graduating with a degree in business from the University of Virginia, Michaelmoved to Japan to teach English. While in Japan, he became interested in food as medicine.
After returning stateside, Michael pursued his interest in San Francisco as a grocery buyer. Hisexperience in that role helped him realize his passion was to help people improve their healththrough lifestyle changes. This led to his decision to pursue medicine.
Michael attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and knew, from thebeginning of his training, that he wanted to become a Family Medicine physician. Michael didhis residency training in Asheville at MAHEC and then completed a yearlong residentialfellowship at the University of Arizona to further explore his interests in Integrative Medicine. Heis in the process of becoming board-eligible for a certification in Integrative Medicine. Michaelhas returned to Asheville to build relationships, community, and a career as a provider atIntegrative Family Medicine of Asheville.
Michael is interested in lifestyle as medicine. He enjoys working together with patients to tailoradjustments in diet, exercise, sleep, substance use, and mindfulness practices. While he iscurious about all medical topics, he has specific interests in disorders of the GI tract, chronicfatigue, anxiety/depression, mind/body medicine, preventative care, supplements/herbs, wilderness medicine, andurgent care among many other topics.
Michael takes pride in calling the Blue Ridge Mountains home. He enjoys the outdoors and likeshiking, biking, and trail running. Michael delights in tasty, healthy cooking and prepares most ofhis own meals. He subscribes to the idea that healthy food prepared with thoughtfulnessnourishes the soul. Gardening, watching documentaries and podcasts, and spending time withfamily and friends fills up his time outside of work.
