SUMMARY:Myths and Truths of Eating Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opportunity to learn from two regional experts on eating disorders. This virtual class will explore the myths and truths of disordered eating and eating disorders\, discover the signs and symptoms to be aware of\, and learn how to give and receive support when there may be a concern. Expand your knowledge and gain valuable insights with this virtual event. \n“With 1 death every 52 minutes occurring in the U.S. as a direct result of an eating disorder\, eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any mental illness. With early intervention\, full recovery is possible. With treatment\, the mortality rate of people with serious eating disorders falls from 20% to 2-3%.”\n– Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders  \nIf you are interested in attending the class\, RSVP prior to April 27 at 5:00 pm by following this link. The class is free for Integrative Life Members. \nSimone Seitz’s professional expertise spans marketing\, small business\, events\, projects\, and nonprofit management. Her passion for collaboration and building strong relationships\, combined with her personal history of disordered eating\, drive Simone to make a difference as the Executive Director of the Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders. Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders (CRC for ED) is the only nonprofit in NC providing education\, resources\, and support to individuals\, families\, and professionals concerned with disordered eating and recovery from eating disorders.   \nChristy Maloney is a Charlotte\, NC-based Registered Dietitian specializing in helping those with eating disorders and disordered eating. Christy earned a BS in psychology from Wingate University and completed coursework for a BS in Human Nutrition plus a dietetic internship. Since 2011 she has been a RD\, initially working in clinical settings at hospital systems in South Carolina. After two clinical years\, Christy worked at the Renfrew Center for Eating Disorders\, honing her skills and developing a career in this field. Next she worked in private practice\, contracting with a local company treating eating disorders and disordered eating. In 2019 she opened her own practice devoted solely to the treatment of eating disorders at an outpatient level. Christy has become a Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian – Supervisor (CEDRD-S)\, now the CEDS-S certification. She also is an iaedp-approved supervisor for other dietitians looking to obtain their CEDS certification.

SUMMARY:Heart Centered Meditation with Dr. Aneela Cox
DESCRIPTION:Looking to experience less stress and more peace in your day-to-day life? In many spiritual practices\, the heart center is a key to diving into deeper states of consciousness. The heart-centered meditation (HCM) is different from most meditation practices (mindfulness based\, Zen meditations\, etc.) in that it uses four attributes–compassion\, innate harmony\, healing presence and unconditional love–to connect to the heart space. This meditation also uses the Karunesh Heart Chakra Meditation soundtrack to deepen the practice.  \nDr. Aneela Cox will be offering a Heart-Centered Meditation series between January 19 and March 10\, 2023\, on Thursdays at 12:00 pm\, and Fridays at 8:00 am\, with the exception of holidays. This is offered exclusively to Integrative Life and Employee Health Plan members\, free of charge. Registration in advance of the first session you wish to attend is required. Here is the link to register for the Thursday meditations at 12:00 pm\, and here is the link to register for the Friday meditations at 8:00 am. You will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link for joining.  \nThe heart-centered meditation was given to Dr. Cox by her teacher\, Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson\, the fellowship director at the Andrew Weil Center of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Chiasson shared that “We must polish the heart everyday\,” a process facilitated by HCM. Dr. Cox has practiced and taught various styles of meditations over the past decade and feels called to once again share HCM with the our clinic members.

SUMMARY:“Teens\, Screens\, and Drugs: What to Know and How to Start the Conversation” with Beth Hockman\, M.S. and Kriya Lendzion\, LCMHC\, LCAS\, CPS
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic has dramatically changed our children’s relationship to screens\, and pandemic-related stresses have led to an increase in substance use among kids. \nIn response\, Integrative Family Medicine of Asheville is hosting a panel discussion with two local experts on parenting and addiction. This discussion will help parents who are: \n\nTired of battling with their kids about screens and technology\n\n\nConcerned about the social and neurologic effects of screens and social media\n\n\nSeeking to understand current substances available to kids and their risks\n\n\nWishing to engage in meaningful discussions about risks and healthy choices\n\nIn this moderated conversation between Beth Hockman\, M.S. and Kriya Lendzion\, LCMHC\, LCAS\, CPS\, we will explore child and teen screen health\, the realities of today's drug scene\, and how to have impactful conversations with your child about these issues.  \nThis panel discussion will take place on Wednesday\, December 7\, 2022\, from 7:00-8:00 pm at Wrong Way’s River Lodge. There is no cost for attending; however\, space will be limited. Please RSVP by registering via this link. Face masks are optional. \nThis event will be broadcasted virtually for free as well via this link. \nBeth Hockman\, M.S. is a parent coach\, educator\, facilitator\, TEDx speaker\, and homeschool mom. Beth has been in the experiential education field for over 28 years. She uses her experience and philosophical understanding of the experiential education field to write curriculum and consult for various organizations. She has a B.S. in Social Psychology and an M.S. in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University. Beth has worked for various adventure education programs—including 18 years with Outward Bound in both the U.S. and Africa. She is one of the founders of Asheville TAASC\, a youth based non-profit that combines the power of wilderness leadership and service learning into value forming experiences for young people. Beth has worked as both a High School teacher and as an Academic Director. She believes in educating the whole person. \nKriya Lendzion\, LCMHC\, LCAS\, CPS  has journeyed from her own years as a “hot mess” teen in high conflict with her parents to becoming one of the nation’s leading youth addiction and prevention specialists. She has been a school counselor\, adolescent therapist\, and drug and alcohol educator for over two decades. As a parent coach\, speaker\, and author\, Kriya empowers adults to be “teen whisperers” with the youth in their lives\, in order to help “addiction-proof” them for an increasingly risky and addictive world. Humorously known as “The Drug Lady” in our community\, she regularly conducts drug and addiction education at several schools across Buncombe County and provides parent and family coaching\, consulting\, and training across the country. Kriya is currently the Middle School Counselor at Rainbow Community School and French Broad River Academy for Girls.

SUMMARY:Heart Centered Meditation with Dr. Aneela Cox
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are looking for a different approach to meditation\, or wanting to try it for the first time\, we hope you can join in Wednesday mornings at 6:30 am as Dr. Aneela Cox leads us in a thirty minute heart centered meditation! Every Wednesday through March 31\, 2021\, Dr. Cox will be offering free guided heart centered meditations via Zoom. You can register through this link.  \n\nIn most spiritual practices\, the heart center is the key to diving into deeper states of consciousness. The heart-centered meditation (HCM) is different from most meditation practices (mindfulness based\, Zen meditations\, etc). It uses four attributes: compassion\, innate harmony\, healing presence and unconditional love to connect to the heart space. This meditation also uses the Karunesh Heart Chakra Meditation soundtrack to deepen the practice.\n\nThe heart-centered meditation was given to Aneela by her teacher\, Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson\, the fellowship director at the Andrew Weil Center of Integrative Medicine. Her teacher states that “We must Windex the heart everyday\,” which the HCM allows her to do. Aneela has practiced and taught various styles of meditations over the past decade and she feels called to share the HCM with the Asheville community through IFMA.

SUMMARY:Building Resilience with Slow\, Mindful Yoga with Kristine Kaoverii Weber\, MA\, c-IAYT\, eRYT500
DESCRIPTION:Yoga is not simply an exercise practice that can help you get in shape or become more flexible.  \nWhen practiced slowly and mindfully\, yoga can be a powerful component in building a more resilient nervous system. While yoga practice may have been a nice idea or a good habit pre-COVID\, during this global pandemic\, developing a regular mind-body practice like yoga is becoming increasingly essential. In this 60-minute IFMA community class\, Kristine Kaoverii Weber yoga therapist and founder of Subtle® Yoga will discuss scientific findings which suggest that there may be important neurobiological benefits of regularly practicing slow\, mindful movement; she will also guide participants through a 20 minute chair yoga class. \nKristine Kaoverii Weber\, MA\, c-IAYT\, eRYT500 has been studying yoga and holistic healing for 30 years\, teaching since 1995\, and training yoga teachers since 2003. SUMMARY:Mindfulness Lab with Emily Horn
DESCRIPTION:In this meditation session we will focus on nervous system support as we soften into the present moment. This is easier said than done. To gently allow for this\, we will bring focus to compassion and the foundations of mindfulness (breath\, body sensations\, emotions\, and thinking). Please come prepared to practice individually and participate in this group experience. \nEmily Horn is an authorized dharma and meditation teacher through Spirit Rock Meditation Center\, Insight Meditation Society\, and InsightLA. She is also a Certified Mindfulness Teacher via the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. Emily has been called a “power player of the mindfulness movement" by Wired Magazine. Emily lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with her husband\, Vince\, and son\, Zander. \nThe class is free and open to the community at large. If you are interested in attending please register prior to 10:00 am on July 23 by clicking on this link. Zoom Meeting details will be included in the confirmation email received after registering. SUMMARY:The Gifts in Disruption with Andrew Burdette\, LCHMCA\, LCASA
DESCRIPTION:When we experience disruption in our lives\, it often stirs our fears and feeds our anxiety. In these times\, it is valuable to recognize the opportunities that come with interruption. As most of us are spending more time at home\, it can be easy to feel isolated from those close to us and the activities we previously engaged in that helped us find balance. Directing our attention and engagement toward connecting with family and friends remotely and pursuing some of our passions in the newly created space within our lives are some of the gifts this disruption offers. This class is intended to help you become aware of the gifts this disruption offers you and present some tools to help you recenter\, ground\, and manage the fears and anxiety you may be experiencing. \nAndrew Burdette\, LCHMCA\, LCASA\, began working with clients in 2016 by helping them address substance use issues. In 2018\, he completed his Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Appalachian State University with coursework in addictions\, multicultural counseling\, and mindfulness. In addition to his undergraduate and graduate studies\, Andrew also has training and experience in mindfulness and meditation techniques\, as well as using bio and neurofeedback tools to assist individuals in balancing the body-mind system. He most enjoys helping individuals develop deeper\, more authentic connections with themselves and others to live a more integrated\, fulfilled life.  \nIf you are interested in attending this class\, please register prior to April 15 at 12:00pm.  The class is free and open to the community at large. Zoom Meeting details will be included in the confirmation email received after registering at this link: https://integrativefamily-med-asheville.as.me/?appointmentType=12137068.  This class will be recorded\, edited to protect participant privacy\, and the final version will be made available here.
