Avram Friedman is a founder and the Executive Director of The Canary Coalition, a non-profit grassroots environmental justice organization started in 2001. His history of social and environmental activism dates back to the 1960’s when he organized against the Vietnam War and nuclear power. He studied political science at Hunter College in The Bronx, NY, and later in Sylva, NC, became a plumbing contractor specializing in the design and installation of solar hot water systems. He earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in renewable energy technology at Southwestern Technical College (now Southwestern Community College). He has run for political office four times unsuccessfully but succeeded in helping initiate several landmark environmental laws.
